A TRIBUTE TO MY FRIEND
DOM FAMULARO
I am fortunate to say I met Dom at the very early stage of my life. I was 17 years old and had been taking drum lessons from Al Miller for about a year and a half. Dom was filling in for Al while he and his wife Jean went on, what was supposed to be, a one week vacation to the Caribbean. Ironically, while on vacation Al sat in with the band. Al was so good that the General Manager asked if he and Jean would stay another week to play and the hotel would comp him. Al stayed the extra week.
What that meant was, I would be taking lessons from Dom for two weeks. Those two weeks changed our lives and began a lifelong friendship. The photo at left was a long, long time ago at a clinic I cannot remember where.

DOM CHANGED THE WORLD
There are very few people who change the world — Dom is one of those people who changed the world. He not only changed they way I looked at drumming but also the way I looked at life.
I hope at some point you had the opportunity to spend some time with him. I will always appreciate the time I spent with him.

ONWARD
And UPWARD
“Onward & Upward” was one of Dom Famularo’s favorite sayings.
Dom was my best friend for almost 50 years.

I had the opportunity to study with Al Miller, Jim Chapin, and Dom Famularo. What I have learned over the years from these exceptional individuals, like anything else you would like to accomplish, it takes dedication and practice. More important than that — it is a lifelong learning process. Having studied with Al was special, spending time Jim Chapin well into his 80’s was invaluable (even he was always trying to learn more), and having Dom in my life for almost five decades was life-changing.
The time I spent with Dom is an entire different story. We became friends when I was 17 and he was 22. He was an incredible player and influenced my entire life. It’s no wonder he went on to become, “Drumming’s Global Ambassador.”
To this day I still study, practice and I’m proud to say I will learn from Dom forever and I am forever grateful for everything he has given to me and so many others.
It’s about always learning and always improving. Learn from everyone you can!
He always said, “Onward & Upward” and now I’m saying — EVERY BEAT COUNTS!
